Port dead in System Information
A Thunderbolt port that lists nothing in System Information with a known-good cable and device, while its neighbours work, has usually lost its retimer or its power controller on the logic board. A port that accepts USB devices but refuses Thunderbolt ones points at the retimer. One that gives no power at all points at the controller.
We also check for a bent pin inside the socket with a loupe before anything else; a cable forced in at an angle does that. Note which port it is, counting from the left at the back, and bring the mini with the cable that showed the fault.
Cable, port, or format
Most dead ports turn out to be dead cables.
USB-C cables vary enormously and look identical. A large share of the ones people own are charge-only and carry no data or video whatsoever, which produces exactly the symptom of a failed port. Before anything else, test with a cable you know carries Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 — then, keeping that same cable, try a different port. If one port works and another does not, you have isolated a real hardware fault; if both fail with a good cable, you have not.
One more check worth doing before you book anything: open System Information and look under USB and Thunderbolt. If the device appears there but never shows in Finder, the port is working perfectly and what you have is a format or permissions problem on the drive. That distinction saves a wasted trip, and it is the reason we ask people to run it before coming in.

Ports stopped recognising drives or cables? Try these fixes before assuming hardware.
If a Thunderbolt or USB port on the Mac mini M4 isn't recognising devices, work through these checks. 1) Try a different cable. USB-C cables vary wildly - many are charge-only USB 2.0 and won't carry data or video. Use a known-good Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 cable to test. 2) Try a different port and the same cable.
If port 1 fails but port 2 works, the issue is the port, not the cable. 3) Reset the SMC / power state - shut down, unplug power for 30 seconds, plug back in, boot. 4) Open System Information → USB and Thunderbolt - if the device shows up there but not in Finder, it's a formatting/permission issue, not a port issue. 5) Update macOS - early 15.x had a Thunderbolt enumeration bug. If a port shows nothing in System Information across multiple devices, it's hardware.

From the bench: what we see with this one
The ports fail on the M4 mini less often than people fear. What we find on the bench in most of these cases is a device that draws more current than the port will give. A bus-powered 3.5-inch hard drive enclosure, or a Thunderbolt dock running from a weak brick, drops off the bus under load and looks like a bad port. Powering the device from its own supply ends the fault.
The other recurring cause is a dock with old firmware. Dock makers update firmware for new Macs, and CalDigit and OWC both have Mac utilities for it. We run the dock's update before testing the Mac, every time, and more than one suspected port fault has ended there.
