Thunderbolt Bridge shows no connection
If Thunderbolt Bridge appears in Network but never gets a self-assigned address, the cable is the suspect almost every time. Charge cables and USB 3 cables do not carry Thunderbolt; the cable needs the lightning-bolt mark on both plugs. System Information, under Thunderbolt, should list the other Mac on the port.
With the right cable and still nothing, switch the firewall off on both Macs, and check the cable is in a Thunderbolt port on the mini rather than a USB-A port through an adapter. If that port sees no Thunderbolt device at all, bring the mini in; port damage is a bench repair.

Thunderbolt Bridge is the fastest way to link two Macs.
A single Thunderbolt 4 cable between a Mac mini M1 and a MacBook Air M4 gives a direct link. Enabling Thunderbolt Bridge in System Settings under Network on both machines lets macOS assign self-link addresses automatically, with no router or configuration involved.

The fastest way to connect a Mac mini M1 and a MacBook Air M4 is over Thunderbolt 4. Connect the two Macs with a single Thunderbolt 4 cable, then open System Settings → Network → Thunderbolt Bridge on both machines. macOS auto-assigns self-link IPs and you immediately get 10 Gbps+ file transfers between them. For a one-time data move, use Migration Assistant (Applications → Utilities) - pick "From another Mac" on the destination and "To another Mac" on the source. If you only need to see one Mac's screen on the other, enable Screen Sharing under System Settings → General → Sharing and connect via Finder → Network.
