Bring the project you actually work in. On the bench we open Activity Monitor, go to the Memory tab and watch Memory Pressure while you run a normal hour on a 16 GB loaner. Green means the M4 is the answer. Yellow for long stretches on the same workload means the 24 GB M3 earns its place.
Memory is soldered on both machines, so whatever you pick is what you keep for the life of the Mac. Storage can be extended later over Thunderbolt. RAM cannot. If you are buying second-hand we check battery cycles and the logic board history before any money changes hands.
Chip or capacity
For most people the newer chip beats the larger memory.
The M4 brings a faster Neural Engine, meaningfully better single-core performance, AV1 decode and improved efficiency cores. Against that, 16 GB of unified memory comfortably handles a browser full of tabs, Office, light development work, HD timelines in Final Cut and Lightroom. If your work fits inside 16 GB today, the newer chip is the better buy and will stay useful for longer.
The exception is real and worth being honest about. Unified memory is shared between CPU, GPU and Neural Engine, so once you exceed it the machine starts swapping and everything slows down at once — no amount of chip speed rescues that. If you edit 4K or 8K in Resolve, run large container stacks, work in Logic with very high track counts, or run language models locally, capacity is your constraint and the larger memory wins.

More RAM on the older chip, or less RAM on the newer one? It depends on your workload.
For most users, the M4 with 16 GB beats the M3 with 24 GB. The M4 has a faster Neural Engine, ~25% better single-core performance, AV1 decode, and improved efficiency cores - and 16 GB of unified memory is enough for Safari with 30+ tabs, Office, Xcode-light, Final Cut HD timelines, and Lightroom. Pick the M3 24 GB only if you specifically run memory-heavy workflows: 4K/8K video editing in DaVinci Resolve, large Docker / Kubernetes stacks, Logic Pro with 80+ tracks, or LLMs running locally via Ollama. Unified memory is shared between CPU, GPU, and ANE - once you exceed 16 GB, swap activity slows everything down. If your work fits in 16 GB today, the M4 chip is the smarter buy and will age better.

From the bench: what we see with this one
We see the swap problem most often on machines bought for video. A 16 GB Air running a single 4K timeline in Final Cut is fine; the trouble starts when Chrome with forty tabs and a Lightroom catalogue are open behind it. The SSD then absorbs the swap, and on the base 256 GB models that SSD is a single NAND package, so the whole machine feels slower than its chip suggests.
Second thing we check for buyers in Dubai is where the machine will live. Both chips are efficient, but a Mac that sits in a hot car or an uncooled villa office through August will throttle long before it runs out of memory. The M4's efficiency cores help there. Memory does not.
