A blurry screen on an M1 MacBook Pro 16 is usually one of three things. 1) Display Scaling is set to a non-native resolution - open System Settings → Displays and select "Default for display" or the highest "More Space" option. 2) Sub-pixel rendering is misaligned after a sleep/wake cycle - close the lid, wait 30 seconds, open again. 3) The display cable (flex ribbon) is partially seated - common after the laptop has been dropped or carried while open. To test: connect an external monitor.
If the external is sharp, the internal LCD or cable is damaged. If both look blurry, it's a software/scaling issue or a GPU driver bug - boot into Safe Mode (shut down, hold power for 10s, choose startup disk while holding Shift). Rule out scaling and software first
- 1Open System Settings, Displays, and choose Default for display. If you use a scaled option, pick one and restart.
- 2Close the lid for thirty seconds and reopen it; a sleep-wake rendering glitch clears this way.
- 3Restart into Safe Mode by holding the power button until Options appears, selecting the startup disk and holding Shift. If the screen is sharp there, a login item or display utility is the cause.
- 4Check for macOS updates; display driver fixes ship with system updates on Apple silicon.
Test the display hardware
Connect any external monitor or TV over HDMI or USB-C. If the external picture is sharp while the built-in screen stays blurry, the fault is in the internal display path: the flex cable behind the hinge or the panel itself. Move the lid slowly through its range; blur, flicker or banding that changes with the angle points to the cable.

Does display scaling cause blur on a Retina MacBook?
Yes. The panel has a fixed native resolution and any scaled setting that does not map cleanly onto it is resampled, which softens text and edges. Default for display is pixel-exact. If you need more space, the More Space option is the least soft of the scaled choices.
