Fix a MacBook Screen Glitch

MacBook screen glitches - flickering, horizontal lines, color shifts, ghosting - usually have one of four causes. Try fixes in this order. 1) Software refresh: close the lid for 30 seconds, reopen. macOS reinitialises the display driver. 2) Reset NVRAM (Intel Macs only - restart while holding Cmd+Option+P+R for 20 seconds) or full power cycle for Apple silicon. 3) Boot into Safe Mode (Apple silicon: hold power until startup options appear, then Shift+Continue) - if the glitch disappears, the cause is a third-party kext or graphics driver. 4) Update macOS to latest version - many display bugs are patched in point releases. 5) Connect an external monitor; if it's clean, the internal LCD or cable ("Flexgate" on Pro 13/15 2016-2019) is failing.

The screen glitches that come into Bur Dubai in summer have a seasonal cause the manuals do not cover. Laptops carried from a 45 degree car into a 20 degree office pick up condensation inside the lid, and the display flex connector corrodes within a few months. The symptom is a flicker in the first ten minutes of use that settles down, then one day stays. We open the hinge cover, inspect the flex under the microscope and replace the cable if the gold fingers are pitted.

On 2016 to 2019 13-inch models we look for Flexgate straight away: the stage-light pattern along the bottom edge when the lid opens past a certain angle. For Apple silicon machines, a glitch that only appears on an external display through a dock is almost always the dock, and we prove it with a direct cable before touching the laptop.
