Native resolution still missing
If Option-Scaled does not list the monitor's native mode even on the Apple cable, the Mac is reading a bad EDID from the display. We see this on older Samsung and LG 4K panels and on almost every HDMI switch or KVM: the switch presents its own stripped-down EDID and macOS believes it. Remove anything between the Mac and the monitor and test again.
Still stuck? Note the monitor model, the exact port you used and the highest mode offered. Bring the Mac mini and the cable; the monitor can stay at home because we have 4K and 5K panels on the bench to prove which side is at fault.
Hidden resolutions
macOS hides most resolutions until you hold Option.
A Mac mini M4 Pro showing a low resolution is usually not a hardware limit. System Settings lists a short set of scaled options by default, and holding Option while clicking Scaled reveals every resolution the cable and the port can actually carry.
If the native resolution is missing from that longer list, the constraint is the signal path rather than the Mac. That points back at the cable or the port before anything else is worth changing.
Hold Option and click Scaled to see every supported mode.

Mac mini M4 Pro low display resolution is usually a cable, scaling, or detect issue - not the Mac. Fix in order: 1) Open System Settings → Displays. Select the external monitor. Hold Option and click "Scaled" - this reveals all supported resolutions the cable/port can carry. Pick the highest one labelled "More Space" or the monitor's native (3840×2160 for 4K, 5120×1440 for ultrawide, etc.). 2) Verify the cable supports the resolution: HDMI 2.0 caps at 4K@60Hz, HDMI 2.1 needed for 4K@120Hz.
USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 carries DisplayPort 1.4 (up to 6K@60Hz). Charge-only USB-C cables won't carry video. 3) Set refresh rate: in Displays, click the dropdown next to Refresh Rate - pick the monitor's native (60, 120, 144 Hz). 4) Some monitors require HDMI input mode set to "Enhanced" or "PC" via the monitor's own OSD. From the bench: what we see with this one
The M4 Pro mini has a quirk worth knowing. It hands out whatever resolution the monitor's EDID advertises, and many 4K televisions used as monitors in Dubai advertise 4K only at 30 Hz over HDMI until an input is switched to PC or Game mode in the television's own menu. The symptom is a blurry 1080p desktop that looks fine in the TV's settings screen. Change the input mode on the TV, then unplug and replug the cable so the Mac re-reads it.
The second trap is scaling. A 27-inch 4K panel at native 3840 by 2160 shows text too small to read, so people pick a scaled mode and assume the resolution dropped. Pick the mode that looks like 2560 by 1440; the Mac still renders at full 4K and downsamples, which is why text stays sharp.
