The 24-inch iMac M4 is a genuinely good machine - thinner, faster, and quieter than the M3 it replaced. After 18 months of servicing them in Dubai, we have enough data points to map the recurring issues. Some are real defects, some are configuration mistakes, and some are quirks of running an Apple Silicon desktop in 45C summer apartments. Here is the honest list, with what we have seen and how we fix it.
Issue 1 - intermittent display flicker
By far the most common report. Brief horizontal flicker, usually when the machine wakes from sleep or when switching between dark mode apps. We have traced this to three causes:
- Third-party USB-C hubs - the most common culprit. Cheap unbranded hubs from JLT or Karama electronics shops cause the display controller to renegotiate. Fix: use Apple, OWC, or CalDigit hubs only.
- macOS power management bug in early Sequoia builds - patched in 15.2 and later, update macOS first.
- True genuine hardware fault on the display controller - rare but real, requires Apple Service.
How we diagnose it at Azizi
Free diagnosis at Concord Tower: we disconnect all peripherals, run the unit on the latest macOS Tahoe 26 release for 60 minutes, and observe. If flicker persists with no peripherals on latest macOS, it is hardware and we refer you to Apple under warranty. If flicker stops, we identify which peripheral is the cause.
Issue 2 - Wi-Fi 6E disconnects
M4 iMacs occasionally drop Wi-Fi connection, particularly on 6 GHz band, in dense Dubai apartment buildings (Marina, JLT, Business Bay towers). The router is broadcasting, other devices stay connected, but the iMac drops to no internet. Symptoms cluster around peak evening hours when 6 GHz channels are congested.
Fix is usually router-side, not iMac-side: force the iMac to 5 GHz band only in router settings, or upgrade to a Wi-Fi 7 mesh that handles 6 GHz band steering better. We do this consultation as part of our IT support work for SMB offices in DIFC and Business Bay - usually a 30 minute fix.
Issue 3 - fan ramp under sustained load
The M4 24-inch has a single fan. Under sustained creative load - Final Cut Pro export, DaVinci Resolve render, Blender cycles, Cinema 4D playback - the fan ramps to audible levels after 8 to 15 minutes. This is by design. The fix is environmental:
- Keep the iMac out of direct sun - critical in Marina apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows.
- Ambient air conditioning below 25C during heavy work.
- At least 10 cm clearance behind the unit for exhaust.
- Annual dust clean - even in air-conditioned offices, Dubai dust accumulates.
Thermal repaste is not needed on M4 yet
Some shops are already quoting M4 thermal repaste. We do not recommend it on 18-month-old units - Apple's factory paste is good for at least 4 years on M-series under normal use. Save the money unless you have measurable thermal throttling on a unit that is 4+ years old.
Issue 4 - USB-C port damage
The M4 has 4 USB-C ports on the rear, and they take physical abuse from constantly plugged peripherals. We see port damage from:
- Hub cables under tension - especially in Studio City editor benches where the cable runs across the desk.
- Cheap C-to-C cables that don't seat properly.
- Connecting and disconnecting power-only or DP-only cables to ports that expect USB4.
Port replacement at Azizi is quoted per port after diagnosis. Logic board level repair, 2 to 4 days turnaround. We always recommend strain relief on the cable side to prevent recurrence.
Issue 5 - thermal throttling on Blender, Cinema 4D, Premiere export
Under genuine sustained load (45+ minutes of Cycles render or Premiere ProRes export), the M4 24-inch will throttle. This is fundamental to the single-fan thin chassis. For motion designers and 3D artists who push the M4 hard daily, a Mac Mini M5 Pro or a Mac Studio is a better tool - both have larger thermal headroom. See our Mac Studio Repair Dubai for more on that path.
Issue 6 - SSD wear-out warnings (rare but reported)
A handful of Dubai units have reported SMART warnings on the SSD inside the first 18 months. Always check whether it is a real wear-level issue or a swap-file thrashing problem caused by a small 256GB drive. Most cases are the latter and the fix is external Thunderbolt SSD for scratch and project files.
When to call Apple vs when to call Azizi
| Symptom | Try Azizi first | Direct to Apple |
|---|---|---|
| Display flicker with peripherals attached | Yes - we identify the culprit free | Only if persists after isolation |
| Wi-Fi 6E drops | Yes - usually router-side fix | If isolated to iMac after testing |
| Fan noise | Yes - environmental fix or clean | Rare |
| Port damage from user wear | Yes - port repair, quoted after free diagnosis | Not covered by warranty |
| Genuine SSD hardware failure | Diagnosis + data recovery | Apple for board replacement under warranty |
| No power, no boot, no chime | Diagnosis to confirm board fault | Apple if under warranty |
