Why iMac screens are different from a normal monitor
The iMac display is not a removable monitor in a case. From 2012 onwards Apple laminated the LCD, glass, and timing controller into a single bonded assembly. There is no air gap, no separate glass to swap. If the glass cracks, the LCD comes out. If the LCD develops dead pixels or backlight bleed, the glass comes out with it. This is the single biggest reason iMac screen jobs cost more than equivalent MacBook screens.

What 'starting from' actually means
These are baseline panel + labour prices. Final cost can vary if the camera ribbon, antenna assembly, or display data cable was damaged in the same incident that broke the screen. We always confirm exact pricing in writing after a free diagnosis.
OEM-grade vs Apple-pull vs aftermarket
Three panel categories exist in the Dubai parts market, and the price difference between them is significant.
Apple-pull panels
Tested original Apple panels recovered from working iMacs (typically water-damaged units where the screen survived). Identical to factory in every measurable way: colour gamut, brightness, viewing angle, True Tone behaviour. Most expensive option but the closest to original spec.
OEM-grade panels
Made by the same panel factory as Apple's original supplier (typically LG Display or Samsung Display), but not branded Apple. Excellent colour and brightness, occasionally minor differences in factory calibration. Best value for most home and office users.
Aftermarket panels - what to avoid
Generic third-party panels that look right on the surface but have lower colour gamut, dimmer backlight, and sometimes refresh issues. We do not stock these at Azizi. If a Dubai workshop is quoting AED 900 for a 27-inch 5K replacement, this is almost certainly the panel grade being used.
Hidden costs that catch people out
- Adhesive tape kit - small consumable, included in our quotes but billed separately by some workshops at AED 80-150.
- Display data cable damage - if the original was kinked during removal by a previous shop, the cable is an extra part and goes on the written quote before we start.
- Camera and microphone ribbon - same risk during disassembly, and a damaged ribbon is listed on the written quote as a separate part.
- Recalibration time - True Tone on 2017+ Retina panels needs profile reapplication after panel swap.
- Disposal of broken glass - reputable shops include this, others charge AED 50-100.
How long the repair actually takes
Bench time on a 27-inch 5K screen swap is around 3 to 4 hours, but we usually quote 3 to 5 calendar days. The reason: adhesive cure time. The new panel is bonded to the chassis with strip adhesive that needs 24 to 48 hours to set before the unit can be transported safely. If a workshop promises a same-day 27-inch 5K screen replacement, they are either skipping the adhesive cure or using mechanical clips that vibrate loose later.
When repair is not worth it
A 2015 21.5-inch non-Retina iMac with a cracked screen and a Fusion Drive that is starting to fail is rarely worth a full panel replacement. A new panel plus the storage upgrade it will soon need can come close to what a working unit sells for second-hand. We will tell you this honestly during diagnosis. The 27-inch 5K and any M-series unit almost always passes the cost-benefit test because the rest of the machine is still capable.
