We almost always recommend the NVMe path on 27-inch 5K
For 2015-2017 27-inch 5K iMacs, an NVMe upgrade via PCIe adapter gives 2x to 4x the sustained read speed of the original Apple SSD. Excellent for Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve scratch disks on Media City editor benches.
External SSD option - when it makes more sense
For iMac Pro and all M1, M3, M4 24-inch models, internal SSD upgrade is not an option because the storage is either soldered or part of the SoC package. External Thunderbolt 3 or 4 is the practical path.
What to buy
- Thunderbolt 3 enclosure with NVMe slot - around AED 450-700 in Dubai (we recommend Sabrent, ACASIS, or Plugable).
- NVMe drive - 1TB around AED 350, 2TB around AED 650, 4TB around AED 1,400 from Sharaf DG, Jumbo, or Amazon UAE.
- Total cost for a 2TB Thunderbolt 3 external SSD comes to around AED 1,000-1,200 - cheaper than Apple's internal upgrade option on configs that allow it.
Performance expectations
Thunderbolt 3 caps around 2,800 MB/s sustained read in real-world use. Thunderbolt 4 caps around the same on Mac, with better PD and daisy-chain. Both are more than enough for 4K and most 8K video workflows. Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Premiere, and DaVinci Resolve all run flawlessly off external Thunderbolt SSDs - we configure them weekly for production houses in Studio City and Tecom.
Critical warning - back up first
Always back up before any storage work
iMac SSD upgrades are reliable but storage devices that are already failing can become unreadable mid-procedure. If your iMac is showing any symptoms of drive failure (long boot times, kernel panics, beach balls), back up to an external drive or bring it to us for a clone before we attempt anything else. Recovering data from a dead drive is slow, costly and not always possible, and a backup avoids it.
How long the upgrade takes
