A Mac mini M4 that stutters in Lightroom or Final Cut is usually starved of memory or working from a slow drive rather than underpowered. Open Activity Monitor, Memory tab, and watch the memory pressure graph during an export. Yellow or red means the chip is swapping to the SSD; keep catalogs and caches on the fastest drive.

Memory before processor
For photo and 4K video work, memory decides more than cores.
Large RAW catalogues and 4K timelines run into a unified memory limit long before they run into a core count limit. Stepping the memory up matters more to everyday responsiveness than moving to a higher processor tier for this kind of work.
Storage is the other decision, and it is the one that cannot be revisited. Apple silicon internal storage is not user-upgradable, so the capacity chosen at purchase is permanent, which makes external Thunderbolt storage part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

Don't overspend on the Studio if you don't need to - the right M4 Mac mini handles serious photo and video work.
For photo editing and 4K video at non-pro volume, the Mac mini M4 Pro (12-core CPU / 16-core GPU) with 24 GB unified memory is the sweet spot. Configuration: 24 GB RAM (essential for Lightroom catalogs + 50+ MP RAW files), 1 TB internal SSD plus a 2 TB Thunderbolt 4 external (Apple's internal storage upgrade is overpriced - TB4 SSDs match speed at 30% of the cost). Total: around AED 9,500 vs AED 14,500+ for a comparable Mac Studio. The base M4 Mac mini (16 GB) handles light Lightroom and 1080p editing but stutters on multicam 4K or heavy Photoshop layers. Skip Studio unless you're doing 8K, RED RAW, or DaVinci Resolve grading professionally.

From the bench: what we see with this one
Photographers who come to us in Media City after buying the base M4 mini mostly regret the 256 GB drive rather than the 16 GB of memory. The Lightroom cache, Photoshop scratch and macOS itself fill it inside a month and the machine slows as the drive passes 80 percent. We usually leave the memory alone and put a 2 TB Thunderbolt NVMe enclosure on it, with the catalog on the external and previews rebuilt there. For the M4 Pro, the thing to watch is heat in a closed cabinet; the Pro mini will throttle when the room is warm and the chassis has no airflow, and office desks with the mini tucked in a drawer are common here.
The other request we get is about colour. People pair a good mini with a cheap monitor. A display with a factory calibration report matters more for photo work than extra GPU cores.
