If Monterey is on and the iMac takes minutes to boot, the spinning hard drive is the cause in nearly every case. Open Activity Monitor, click Disk, and watch the graph sit at full while the Mac does almost nothing. An SSD turns this machine back into a usable desktop; nothing else does.
The 21.5-inch display is glued to the frame, so the drive swap means cutting the adhesive, lifting the panel and re-sealing it with new strips, a workshop job. We clone the old drive to the SSD so the iMac comes back exactly as it was, only faster, and clean the fan while it is open.

Yes. The 21.5-inch iMac Mid-2014 (iMac14,4) is officially supported by macOS 12 Monterey - the last macOS that runs on it. macOS 13 Ventura dropped this model. To upgrade: 1) Back up via Time Machine first. 2) Open System Preferences → Software Update on your current macOS - if Monterey doesn't appear, download it directly from the App Store (search "macOS Monterey"). 3) The Mid-2014 21.5" has 8 GB non-upgradable RAM and a 1.4 GHz Dual-Core i5; Monterey runs but it's noticeably slow compared to newer Macs.
Quick wins to make it usable: replace the 5,400 RPM HDD with a SATA SSD (boot times drop from 90s to 15s), and limit login items. We still fit SSDs into these 2014 iMacs regularly, and the difference is bigger than most owners expect: a cold boot drops from around a minute and a half to under twenty seconds, and the beachball mostly disappears. The display adhesive is single-use, so the panel is re-sealed with fresh strips, and while the iMac is open the fan and the vents get cleared of the dust these pick up in a Dubai office over ten years. Most of them are packed solid.
People ask about running Ventura or Sonoma with a patcher. It can be done and we have done it for home machines, but we do not put a patched system on a business computer: updates can break it and nobody supports it. Monterey with an SSD is the sensible ceiling for this iMac.
