Mac Trash Empty Folder Delete Fix

Trash refusing to empty because of one stuck folder is usually permissions or a file lock. Try these in order. 1) Close all apps - a file might be open in Finder, Preview, or a background process. Open Activity Monitor and quit anything referencing the file path. 2) Hold Option while choosing Finder → Empty Trash.

This triggers a force-empty that ignores locked files. 3) Restart the Mac and try again - many file locks clear on reboot. 4) Permissions fix: in Finder, right-click the stuck folder in Trash → Get Info → Sharing & Permissions → click the lock to authenticate → grant your user account Read & Write → reattempt Empty Trash. 5) Terminal nuclear option: open Terminal and run `sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*` (be careful - irreversible). 6) If the folder has "in use by another application" error, the file is on an external drive or network volume - eject and reconnect first.

The Mac Pro owners who bring this fault to Concord Tower are nearly always running old media drives from previous workstations, formatted HFS+ years ago and carrying folders with odd permissions from a different user ID. macOS puts those in a .Trashes folder on the external, and the current user cannot delete what user 502 created on a different machine. The fix on the bench is to take ownership of the folder with chown as root, and then it empties.

The other one we see is a Time Machine disk plugged into the Mac Pro with a stray backup bundle dragged to the Trash. Apple locks those with System Integrity Protection, which is why nothing works. Deleting through the Time Machine browser, or with tmutil delete, is the only route. Where a folder cannot be removed by any of this, the directory on the drive itself is damaged and we rebuild it before the drive loses more.
