Still one display after all six steps
When a MacBook Pro M4 drives two monitors on the bench but only one at your desk, the suspect is a monitor that has switched its own input to DisplayPort 1.2 or a low-bandwidth mode after a power cut. DEWA outages reset a lot of monitors to defaults. Check the DisplayPort version in the monitor's own menu.
If both ports fail with every cable and monitor you own, the port's retimer chip on the logic board may have failed, which shows as the monitor flashing on and off. Bring the laptop and both cables; we test on known-good displays and read the port with a Thunderbolt analyser.

A setup that broke on its own usually changed underneath you.
When a dual-monitor arrangement has been running happily and then stops, the thing to look for is what changed rather than what is wrong. A macOS update is the most common answer — early point releases have shipped Thunderbolt handshake bugs that were fixed a version or two later, so checking for a pending update is genuinely the first move, not a formality.
After that, look at the physical chain, because cables and docks fail quietly and gradually. Swap in a different Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 cable before assuming anything about the Mac. If both monitors run through one hub, that arrangement was always relying on something Apple Silicon does not support, and it can stop working after an update even though it appeared fine before. A full shutdown with the power disconnected for half a minute, then Detect Displays, covers the rest.

If your MacBook Pro M4 / M4 Pro dual-monitor setup broke after working fine, the cause is almost always a recent macOS update or a cable/dock issue. Diagnostic order: 1) macOS update - System Settings → General → About → check current version. Open Software Update for any pending patches; early macOS 15.x had a Thunderbolt handshake bug fixed in 15.2. 2) Cable: try a different Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 cable. Charge-only USB-C cables won't drive a second display. 3) Hub or dock: if you use one hub for both monitors, you've hit Apple silicon's MST limitation - connect each monitor to a separate port on the MacBook itself. 4) PRAM/SMC reset (Apple silicon: full shutdown, 30s, reboot). 5) Detect Displays - System Settings → Displays → hold Option, press Detect Displays. 6) Specific app blocking second display - quit screen recorders and DisplayLink drivers.

The first is a monitor plugged into a hub alongside another monitor, which works on an Intel Mac and silently fails on Apple silicon because Apple does not support MST splitting. The second is a USB-C to HDMI adapter rated for 4K30 pushed to 4K60 after a macOS update changed the default refresh rate; the display just blanks. The third is a bent pin inside a Thunderbolt port that the owner noticed as a stiff cable a week earlier. We find it under the microscope and the port socket is replaced at board level.
