MacBook Flexgate - Causes & Fix

"Flexgate" is a known design flaw on MacBook Pro 13 and 15-inch models from 2016 to 2019. Apple used a thin display flex cable routed across the bottom hinge - over thousands of open/close cycles, the cable wears through. The visible symptoms: a row of stage-light-style spots along the bottom of the screen when the lid is partially open, then full backlight failure with the lid past a certain angle. Apple ran a free repair program for the 13-inch 2016 model only; the 15-inch and other 13-inch years are out-of-pocket from Apple. The fix is a full display assembly replacement (the cable is integrated into the display, not separately serviceable).

On the bench the Flexgate cable shows the same wear every time: the backlight flex is the thinnest of the ribbons over the hinge and it frays where it passes over a small lip in the display controller board. Apple lengthened the cable by about two millimetres on the 2018 models, which delays the fault but does not stop it. We see 2018 and 2019 machines arriving with it now that they have had their open-and-close cycles.

Dubai conditions make it worse. The adhesive that holds the cable in place softens in heat, and a Mac carried between an air-conditioned office and a hot car moves the cable fractionally with each cycle. If you own a 2016 to 2019 Pro and have no symptoms yet, the prevention that works is opening the lid gently and never past ninety degrees.
