When pmset shows nothing wrong
A fanless Air that stays warm with the lid shut and a clean assertions list usually has one of two faults. The first is a lid sensor that no longer reports closed, so the Mac never enters full sleep; we see this after a drop or a third-party screen job. The second is a swelling battery pressing on the logic board, which shows as heat near the trackpad rather than the hinge.
Note where the heat sits and whether the battery percentage drops overnight. Then bring it in. We read the sleep log, test the hall sensor with a magnet and check the battery cells before anyone touches the board.
A sleeping Air should be cool
Warmth in sleep means the Air is not actually asleep.
The MacBook Air M2 is fanless and sheds heat through the chassis itself. Closed and genuinely asleep, it should be cool to the touch. Warmth after the lid is shut means something is keeping it awake and working.
Power Nap is the usual reason, because it wakes the machine periodically to fetch mail and updates. A connected USB device sending wake events is the other common cause, and unplugging everything is the quickest way to test for it.
The Air dissipates heat through its chassis, not through a fan.

Lid closed but the Mac is still warm? That's the OS waking for background tasks. Here's how to stop it.
The MacBook Air M2 is fanless - it dissipates heat through the chassis. In sleep mode, it should be cool. If it's warm or hot after closing the lid, something is preventing real sleep. Most common causes: 1) Power Nap is on - open System Settings → Battery → Options and turn off "Power Nap". 2) A USB device is sending wake events - unplug all peripherals before closing the lid. 3) iCloud or Time Machine is mid-sync - wait for sync to finish before closing. 4) Bluetooth wake - turn off "Wake for network access" in Battery → Options. 5) A misbehaving app blocking sleep - open Terminal and run `pmset -g assertions` to see what's keeping the Mac awake; quit the offending app. 6) Hardware: if you've tried all the above and it's still hot, the Power Management IC could be faulty - bring it to our Dubai workshop for diagnosis.
From the bench: what we see with this one
The warm-in-the-bag Air is a regular on the Media City bench, and the cause we find most often is a Bluetooth mouse left switched on in the same laptop bag. Every nudge of the mouse sends a wake packet, the Mac wakes, indexes for a minute and sleeps again. Across a two-hour commute on the metro that adds up to a hot chassis and ten percent of battery gone.
The other common one is a Windows virtual machine or Android emulator left running. Parallels and the Android Studio emulator both hold a sleep assertion that pmset shows as a plain process name, so people skip past it. Quit them before closing the lid and the problem goes away. Genuine hardware causes on the M2 are uncommon by comparison.
