MacBook Screen Cracks - 5 Reasons

MacBook screens crack for five recurring reasons we see daily at our Dubai workshop. 1) Closing the laptop with a foreign object on the keyboard - a pen, headphones, even a folded receipt - creates a single-point pressure crack across the LCD. 2) Picking up the MacBook by the screen instead of the chassis flexes the panel against the hinge. 3) Pressing down on the lid while it's closed (stacking books on top, packing under heavy items in a backpack) is enough to crack the glass. 4) Sudden temperature changes - leaving the MacBook in a hot car in Dubai summer then opening in air conditioning - stresses the bonded glass. 5) Defective Apple hinges ("Flexgate" on 2016-2019 MacBook Pro 13/15) pull the display cable and crack the panel from the inside.

Prevention: never put anything on the keyboard, always lift by the base, and use a protective sleeve. Cracked screen? Same-day replacement at our Dubai workshop.

The one cause we would add from the bench is the car. A MacBook left on a seat in July heats the lid well past what the adhesive was designed for, and a bag dropped onto it later cracks the panel far more easily than it would at room temperature. We see a run of these every summer at Bur Dubai, often with a crack that starts from the camera notch and runs downward.

The other quiet culprit is a bulging battery. As the cells swell they push the top case upward and the lid closes onto a surface that is no longer flat; the first symptom is a trackpad that clicks oddly, the second is a cracked screen. Check for a lifting trackpad whenever a screen cracks for no obvious reason.
