If both USB-A ports stay dead
Two USB-A ports that ignore every device, while the Thunderbolt ports in front and behind work normally, usually mean the USB controller or its power switch on the Mac Studio's I/O board has failed. A single dead port is more often physical: a bent tab inside the socket from a plug pushed in at an angle.
Shut down, unplug every peripheral and the power cord for a minute, then boot with only a wired keyboard in one USB-A port. If it still does nothing, bring the Studio in. We swap the I/O board or rework the port on the bench; the rest of the machine stays closed.
Power, not the port
USB-A supplies 0.9 A per port, which some drives exceed.
The Mac Studio M4 has two rear USB-A ports rated USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps, and each supplies 0.9 amps. A bus-powered external hard drive that needs more will spin up, draw too much and fail to mount, which reads as a dead port from where you are sitting.
The fix is to stop asking the port for power it does not have. A Y-cable that takes power from a second connector, or a powered hub, resolves most of these cases without any repair at all.
Both rated USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps.
Bus-powered drives needing more than that will fail to mount.
Take the power from somewhere other than the port itself.

USB-A drives or peripherals not showing up on Mac Studio M4? Try these fixes.
The Mac Studio M4 has two rear USB-A ports rated USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps). If devices aren't being recognised, the cause is usually power or formatting. 1) Power: USB-A on the Mac Studio supplies 0.9 A per port. Bus-powered external HDDs that need 1.2 A+ will spin up and fail. Use a Y-cable (one connector for power, one for data) or a powered hub. 2) Cable: USB-A 2.0 cables work for keyboards and mice but cap at 480 Mbps.
For storage, use USB-A 3.0+ cables (blue plastic insert). 3) Check System Information, USB. If the device shows there but not in Finder, it's a formatting or permission issue, not a port issue. 4) Reset SMC equivalent on Apple silicon: full shutdown, unplug power for 30 seconds, restart. 5) Test the same device on a different USB-A port.

From the bench: what we see with this one
The Mac Studio lives on the floor or at the back of a desk in most studios we service in Al Quoz and Media City, and the USB-A ports collect dust because they face the wall. We see units where a port is packed solid and the plug sits in by only half; a clean with a wooden toothpick and air fixes it. The other pattern is a USB-A port that stopped working after a bus-powered audio interface or a portable hard drive was plugged in and the port's over-current protection latched. That resets after a full power removal, not after a restart.
If an audio interface drops out at random on USB-A, the fix is a powered hub or moving it to a Thunderbolt port with a USB-C cable, because the M4 Studio's USB-A power budget is modest. Most of the Studios we open for it turn out to be a cable.
