Mac Studio M4 launched in early 2025 and the first wave of Dubai units have now clocked over a year of heavy use. Across the intake jobs at our Concord Tower and Bur Dubai workshops, a clear pattern of M4-specific issues has emerged. None of these are catastrophic, and none of them suggest the machine is unreliable as a whole. But knowing them helps owners triage faster and avoid losing days of billable work on a fault that has a known fix.
This guide is specific to the 2025 Mac Studio, which shipped with M4 Max or M3 Ultra (there is no M4 Ultra). Apple has since replaced it with M5 Max and M5 Ultra models. M1 and M2 owners should refer to the broader Mac Studio repair guide. We have grouped the issues by frequency, with the most common first.
1. Overheating and thermal throttling under sustained load
By far the most common M4 problem in Dubai. The M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips run hotter than their M2 predecessors at the same workload, and Dubai ambient temperatures in summer (often 32-35 degrees inside lightly-cooled offices) push the cooling envelope. Symptoms include: fans audible for the first time since you bought the machine, Cinebench or Blender scores dropping noticeably after the first minute or two, the bottom of the chassis becoming uncomfortably warm to touch.
First diagnostic step: install Macs Fan Control or iStat Menus and watch package temperature during a sustained render. If you see 95+ degrees Celsius sustained, the unit is throttling. Common fixes: dust removal (Dubai dust accumulates faster than you would expect even in indoor environments), thermal paste refresh after 18-24 months of heavy use, ensuring the bottom intake has at least 5 cm clearance from any surface. Thermal service is quoted after a quick check.
2. Thunderbolt 5 port handshake issues
Thunderbolt 5 arrived on the 2025 Mac Studio, and its early controller firmware took time to mature. Symptoms reported: external SSDs dropping the Thunderbolt link mid-write, eGPUs failing to enumerate at first connect, certain Thunderbolt docks (notably some Sonnet and OWC units) requiring a power cycle after sleep. Most cases are firmware-related and resolve after the next macOS point release. A few are controller IC failures that need board-level repair, quoted after diagnosis.
3. SSD write performance degradation
The 2025 Mac Studio shipped with 512 GB (M4 Max) up to 16 TB (M3 Ultra) of SSD. The smaller configurations show measurable write performance drops once they are 80%+ full because Apple uses fewer NAND modules in the smaller capacities. We see this most in video editors who scratch-disk on the internal SSD then forget to clear it. Symptoms: ProRes export times creeping up, scratch performance noticeably worse than a year ago, Blackmagic Disk Speed Test showing clearly lower writes than at purchase.
Not always a fault
If your M4 SSD is more than 80% full, the speed drop is normal NAND behaviour, not a fault. Free 25%+ of the SSD, run TRIM (handled by macOS automatically), and retest. Only treat as a fault if performance does not recover after the drive is freed.
4. Random kernel panics under heavy GPU load
Seen mostly on M4 Max and M3 Ultra units running DaVinci Resolve with Fusion-heavy timelines or Blender Cycles GPU renders. Symptoms: panic logs referencing the AGX GPU driver, machine restarts unexpectedly mid-render, no other symptoms outside the heavy GPU workflow. Workarounds: keep Resolve and the GPU driver portion of macOS at the latest point release, disable hardware acceleration for any third-party media engines that conflict, and improve airflow around the unit for long renders until Apple ships a fix.
5. Front USB-C / SD card slot failures
Front-port failures on M-Studio variants (the ones with USB-C and SD on the front) seem a little more common on our bench than on the M2 generation. Common symptoms: SD cards failing to mount on the front but working on the back, front USB-C charging an iPhone but not data-transferring an SSD. Daughterboard replacement is quoted after diagnosis.
6. HDMI 2.1 display issues with 8K monitors
M4 Mac Studio supports 8K HDMI 2.1 output, but the implementation is finicky with certain monitors (Samsung G9 Neo, LG 27GR95UM, some Sony reference monitors). Symptoms: pink or magenta tint on first connect, HDR signalling not negotiated correctly, monitor losing signal on macOS wake from sleep. Most fixes are cable-related (use the official Apple HDMI cable or a certified Ultra High Speed cable). HDMI controller replacement is needed only in a minority of cases.
7. Bluetooth instability after macOS updates
Each macOS Sequoia or Tahoe point release seems to disturb Bluetooth pairing on M4 units more than on M2 units. Symptoms: Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad dropping, AirPods Pro switching back to iPhone unexpectedly. Usually a software issue - remove and re-pair the device, or restart the Bluetooth service with sudo pkill bluetoothd in Terminal. Hardware-level Bluetooth issues are rare on M4.

When to attempt self-diagnosis and when to call us
If you are comfortable with macOS Recovery, Activity Monitor, Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and the basic reset procedures, the first three issues on this list are often resolvable at home. Anything involving a kernel panic log, port-level failure or measurable thermal throttling under load is worth bringing in for a diagnosis, which is free, and in many cases it saves owners a much bigger bill by catching a controller-level issue before it cascades.
