The PCIe slots on the 2023 Mac Pro are mainly used for audio interfaces (Avid Pro Tools HDX, Universal Audio Apollo, RME MADI), SDI capture (Blackmagic DeckLink 8K Pro, AJA Kona 5), and 10GbE or 25GbE networking for SAN-attached post-production storage like Avid Nexis or DDP storage at Dubai Media City facilities. The 2019 Intel Mac Pro uses Xeon W-3200 series CPUs (8, 12, 16, 24 or 28-core), socketed DDR4 ECC memory up to 1.5TB across 12 DIMM slots, and proprietary MPX (Mac Pro Expansion) modules combining PCIe plus auxiliary power for GPUs like the Radeon Pro W6800X Duo and the Radeon Pro Vega II Duo. This is the last user-upgradable Mac and stays in heavy use across Dubai post-production houses, AI inference workstations and architecture practices running Houdini and Maya.

This is the hardest Mac Pro to repair because of the thermal core architecture - any GPU or CPU failure means full disassembly of the cylinder.

The 2012 cheese-grater Mac Pro is the dual-CPU tower with sockets for Intel Xeon X5600 series CPUs, eight DIMM slots of DDR3 ECC memory up to 128GB, four 3.5-inch drive sleds, two optical drive bays and four full-length PCIe 2.0 slots. This is by far the most user-serviceable Mac in Apple's history and remains in service for Dubai studios running legacy PCIe capture cards (Blackmagic DeckLink, AJA Kona) and final-cut-7 archival workflows.
