Buffer raised, dropouts persist
Disk Overload that survives a 512-sample buffer and matched sample rates is almost always the audio interface rather than the Mac. A USB 2 interface on a hub shares bandwidth with everything else on that hub, and a leftover third-party driver can fight macOS for the device. Plug the interface straight into a Thunderbolt port on the Mac Studio and remove any driver the maker no longer supports on Apple silicon.
If dropouts line up with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth activity, turn both off during sessions. Bring the Mac Studio and the interface if it still fails; we reproduce it on the bench with a known-good project.
The warning names the wrong thing
Disk Overload on an M4 is rarely about the disk.
The M4 internal SSD is far faster than any drive Ableton Live was originally designed around, so a Disk Overload warning on this hardware is almost never a storage bottleneck. The message survives from an era when it usually was one.
The real causes sit in the audio configuration instead. A sample buffer set too low, or a sample rate that does not match between Live and the macOS audio device, produces the same warning on the fastest machine you can buy.
M4 storage far exceeds anything Live was designed to expect.
Preferences, then Audio, then Buffer Size at 256 or 512 samples.
Live and the macOS audio device must agree, 44.1 or 48.

Mac Studio M4 should fly in Ableton - disk overload usually means a sample-buffer mismatch, not slow storage.
"Disk Overload" in Ableton Live 11 on a Mac Studio M4 isn't usually a slow drive - the M4's internal SSD is faster than any spinning disk Ableton was designed for. Real causes: 1) Sample buffer too low - open Live, Preferences, Audio, Buffer Size, raise to 256 or 512 samples. 2) Sample rate mismatch - Live and macOS audio device must both be 44.1 or both 48 kHz. Open Audio MIDI Setup (Applications, Utilities) to verify. 3) High track count with frozen tracks - unfreeze and re-freeze in batches. 4) Streaming samples from a slow external drive (USB 3.0 or Time Machine drive) - move project samples to the internal SSD or a Thunderbolt 4 external. 5) Live Pack indexing or iCloud sync running in the background - pause iCloud Drive while recording. 6) Reset Live preferences if errors persist (Option-click Live on launch).

The Mac Studios we set up for producers around Media City share one issue the Ableton forums rarely mention: Spotlight. A sample library of a few hundred gigabytes on a new external drive is indexed for hours after it is first attached, and the indexer competes for disk and CPU exactly while you are recording. Add the drive to Spotlight's privacy list under System Settings, Siri and Spotlight, before copying samples to it.
The second is Rosetta. Live 11 runs natively on Apple silicon, but an Intel-only plugin forces the whole session into a compatibility bridge and the CPU meter climbs. Check each plugin's architecture in Activity Monitor and update or replace the ones marked Intel.
