Mac Studio M4 Max Slow Read Fix

M4 Max Mac Studio SSD read speeds vary by storage capacity. The 512 GB model uses a single NAND chip and tops out around 3,000 MB/s read; the 1 TB and above use multi-chip configurations and hit 5,000-7,000 MB/s. If your numbers are below spec, run AmorphousDiskMark or Blackmagic Disk Speed Test on an empty file. Common causes of slow reads: 1) Drive is over 80% full - APFS performance drops sharply past that threshold. 2) iCloud Drive is downloading files in the background. 3) Spotlight is reindexing - wait 30 minutes after major changes. 4) FileVault is decrypting after a recent reboot. 5) macOS is running a background Time Machine snapshot.

Most of the slow-SSD Studios we see at Concord Tower come from people who compared their number against a YouTube review of a different capacity. Apple uses the same controller but populates NAND according to the capacity ordered, so a 512 GB machine has fewer parallel channels and reads around half the speed of a 2 TB one. That is by design, and no repair changes it. Where there is a real fault it usually shows as a speed that varies wildly between runs rather than one that is simply low.

We check Activity Monitor's Disk tab during the benchmark for background writes, then look at the SMART data with a command-line tool for media errors and the percentage of spare blocks used. A drive that is burning through spare blocks early will get slower before it fails, and the data should come off it while it still reads. Low speed with clean SMART is almost always software or heat.
