Our estimate for a single key is sometimes more than people expect because the cap itself is rarely the whole story. A key that stopped working after a spill has a corroded contact under the membrane, and on a 2016 or later MacBook that membrane cannot be replaced on its own. The top case is the part Apple supplies.

What keyboard repair really costs
The price depends on one fact: what Apple glued together.
Keyboard pricing confuses people because the same fault costs wildly different amounts by model. A single key — cap and dome — is a modest repair anywhere. But on most 2016-and-later MacBooks, the keyboard, battery and trackpad are riveted and glued into one top-case assembly, so 'replace the keyboard' physically means replacing all three.
That is not upselling; it is how the machine is built. The honest quote names which category your model falls into up front, so the price makes sense before you commit.

From the bench: what we see with this one
The keyboards that reach the Media City bench fall into predictable groups. Spill damage on Magic Keyboard models from 2020 on is the most common. Single keys worn through from gaming are next, usually W, A, S and D on a 2021 or newer Pro, where we can replace the keycap and scissor mechanism individually. Then the 2016 to 2019 butterfly machines, now outside Apple's programme, which come in with repeat letters and keys that need a hard press. And a smaller group where only the backlight has failed, which is a flex cable rather than the keyboard.
For butterfly machines the top case is the only honest fix, and we always check the battery cycle count first because a new top case includes a new battery, which changes the maths for the owner. Dust from construction around Business Bay and JVC gets under butterfly keys and is a cause we see weekly.
