Try these in order. 1) Adjust Key Repeat Delay: System Settings → Keyboard → Key Repeat → set to slowest. This buys you time on intermittent doubles. 2) Compressed-air clean: hold MacBook at 75°, blast under the key from each side.

If a specific key consistently doubles, the dome switch under it has failed. Clean the key the way Apple recommends
- 1Shut down the MacBook and hold it at roughly a 75-degree angle so debris falls out rather than in.
- 2Using compressed air with the straw fitted, spray the affected key left to right, then rotate the MacBook and spray from the right, then from the back.
- 3Keep the can upright; tilting it releases propellant liquid into the keyboard.
- 4Do not prise off keycaps on a butterfly keyboard; the clips break and the key is then a replacement anyway.
- 5Test in a plain text editor. If the key still doubles, move to a hardware repair.
Settings that reduce the symptom
System Settings, Keyboard, then set Key Repeat Rate slower and Delay Until Repeat longer. This does not stop a bouncing switch, but it stops a slight double from being turned into a run of characters, and it buys time until the key is replaced. Booting into Safe Mode confirms the doubling is not a software or accessibility setting.

Why does my MacBook type the same letter twice?
The switch under that key is bouncing, closing twice for one press. Dust or a crumb between the dome and its contact is the usual reason, and worn domes cause it on older keyboards. Butterfly keyboards from 2015 to 2019 are the most prone because they have almost no clearance for debris.
Does compressed air fix a double-typing key?
For an early, intermittent double on one key, often yes. Hold the MacBook at an angle, spray from the left, right and back with the can upright, and test again. If the key doubles consistently or the doubling returns within days, the switch has failed and needs replacing.
Can one key on a MacBook be replaced?

Will a keyboard replacement erase my data?
No. The keyboard and top case are separate from the storage, so your files stay in place. We still recommend a current Time Machine backup before any repair as a matter of routine, and we can make one for you at the workshop if you do not have one.
