If that did not fix it

When the resets change nothing

A built-in keyboard that stays dead after an SMC reset and a Safe Mode boot has almost always lost its connection to the logic board. On 2016 and later MacBooks the keyboard flex runs under the battery and plugs into a small board-side connector; a trace of corrosion there from a drink spilled weeks ago is enough.

Note whether any key responds at all, whether the backlight comes on, and whether an external keyboard types. Bring the machine in with the charger. We open it, check the connector under magnification and test with a known-good top case before quoting anything.

Dead keyboard, quick triage

Safe Mode answers the big question in two minutes.

A keyboard that dies without warning splits into software and hardware, and Safe Mode is the fastest fork in the road: boot holding the power button, choose Safe Mode, and type. Works there? A kext or login item is intercepting input and the fix is software. Still dead? The keyboard, its ribbon or the top case has failed.

The other two-minute checks — SMC-equivalent reset, Slow Keys accidentally enabled, a Bluetooth keyboard's own pairing — clear the remaining false alarms before anyone opens anything.

  • One boot separates a software cause from a hardware one.

The full answer

Keyboard dead with no warning? Try these steps before assuming it's broken.

A keyboard that suddenly stops working has a handful of usual causes. For built-in MacBook keyboards: 1) Reset SMC - shut down, hold power for 10 seconds on Apple silicon. 2) Boot into Safe Mode (hold power until startup options, then Shift+Continue). If keyboard works in Safe Mode, a kext or login item is the cause. 3) Check Slow Keys and Sticky Keys are off in System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard. 4) Liquid spilled recently?

Shut down immediately, dry upside-down for 48 hours, don't try to power on. For external keyboards: 5) Re-pair via Bluetooth. 6) Check batteries. 7) Try a different USB port for wired keyboards. 8) Test the keyboard on another Mac to isolate.

If the built-in keyboard still fails after software resets, the issue is the keyboard's flex cable or membrane - replace via the top-case assembly. We do this at our Dubai workshop with same-day turnaround.

If it is a wireless Magic Keyboard that keeps disconnecting while other devices work, the problem may be the Mac, which is MacBook Bluetooth repair territory.

From the bench: what we see with this one

Most of the dead keyboards that reach the Media City bench are one of two things. Either the keyboard flex connector has a green crust on it from an old spill the owner forgot about, or a row of keys failed together, which points to the membrane rather than the cable. We check the connector first because it takes ten minutes and sometimes a clean and reseat brings everything back. If it does not, the whole top case is replaced, because Apple bonds the keyboard into it.

Summer humidity in Dubai speeds the corrosion up, so a spill in June shows symptoms faster than one in January. One more thing we see often: a MacBook carried in a bag with the charger still plugged in, which bends the port and shorts a trace near the keyboard connector. The repair is still the top case, but the port gets checked too.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

4 direct answers from the Azizi Technologies team.

Why does my keyboard work in Safe Mode but not after a normal boot?
Safe Mode loads only Apple's own drivers and skips login items. If typing works there, a third-party keyboard utility, remapping tool or input-method app is grabbing the keyboard at login. Open System Settings, General, Login Items, remove anything keyboard related, then restart normally. Karabiner-Elements and old BetterTouchTool versions are the usual suspects on the machines we see.
Can only the keyboard be replaced, or does the battery come out too?
On every MacBook made since 2016 the keyboard is riveted into the top case and the battery is glued to the same panel. Apple supplies the top case as one part with keyboard, battery and trackpad fitted. So a keyboard replacement gives you a new battery as well, which is why the repair is worth doing on a machine with a tired battery.
I spilled water and dried it, and now some keys type the wrong letters. Is that the same fault?
Yes, and it tends to get worse. Water leaves mineral deposits between the membrane layers, so a key press bridges two contacts and macOS sees two letters. Drying stops the short-term damage but the residue stays. The fix is the top case. Until then, plug in an external keyboard and back up your files, because corrosion can spread to the board.
