First, reset software settings. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Restore Defaults. Check Modifier Keys (top-right) and confirm Caps Lock, Control, Option, and Command map correctly. Under Input Sources, remove unused layouts and verify the active one matches your physical keyboard (ABC for US, British for UK). Sticky Keys and Slow Keys live in System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard - turn both off if you didn't enable them intentionally.
For Magic Keyboards, unpair via Bluetooth settings, hold the power switch for 10 seconds, then re-pair. To reset macOS keyboard input state, sign out of your user account and back in - this clears in-memory key state. If a specific key is still broken at hardware level, the issue is dust, a failed dome switch, or liquid damage. Reset the software layer first
Work through these in order. Each takes under a minute and none of them touches your files.
- 1System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, then Restore Defaults on every category you have changed.
- 2Modifier Keys, in the same panel, and confirm Caps Lock, Control, Option and Command are mapped to themselves.
- 3Input Sources: remove layouts you do not use and make sure the active one matches the printed keys.

Reset a Magic Keyboard or other Bluetooth keyboard
External keyboards keep their own pairing state, and a stale pairing produces the same symptoms as a broken key.
- 1Open Bluetooth settings, hover the keyboard and choose Forget.
- 2Switch the keyboard off, hold the power switch for ten seconds, then switch it on.
- 3Pair it again from Bluetooth settings and confirm the layout under Input Sources.
When the key itself has failed
If one key still types double, sticks or does nothing after every reset, the dome switch or the membrane under it has failed. Dust, a crumb or a small spill is usually the cause on MacBooks, and worn switches on older external keyboards. Bring the machine in: we test the key path, replace a single key where the mechanism allows it, and replace the keyboard or top case when it does not.

How do I reset my Mac keyboard to factory settings?
Open System Settings, choose Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts and press Restore Defaults in each category. There is no single factory button, but those steps return every setting to Apple's default.
Why is my Mac typing the wrong characters?
Almost always the active input source does not match the physical keyboard, for example a British layout selected on a US keyboard, so symbols move. Open Input Sources under Keyboard settings, remove the wrong layout and select the right one. If only one key is wrong after that, the key itself is faulty.
Why do keys stick or repeat on my MacBook?
A sticking or repeating key is usually a dome switch with dust or a spill under it, common on the 2015 to 2019 butterfly keyboards but seen on Magic Keyboards too. Compressed air sometimes helps for a while. A key that repeats consistently needs the switch replaced, which we do the same day.
Will resetting the keyboard delete my files?
No. Restoring keyboard shortcuts, changing input sources, switching off accessibility options and signing out only affect settings. Your documents, apps and accounts are untouched. Even a full keyboard replacement at the workshop leaves your data in place, though we always recommend a current Time Machine backup before any repair.
Can a single MacBook key be replaced without a new keyboard?
On most models, yes. A missing or broken keycap and a failed scissor or butterfly mechanism can be replaced individually. When the dome switch under the membrane has failed, or several keys in one area have gone, the keyboard or top-case assembly is replaced instead. We tell you which after a free check.
