Drain continues after the first week
A new Air that still loses a third of its charge in a normal morning after indexing and iCloud have finished is usually running something you did not install on purpose. Migration Assistant carries over old login items and Intel-era helper apps that run under Rosetta, and each of those keeps the performance cores busy.
Open System Settings, General, Login Items and clear the list, then check Activity Monitor for anything marked Intel. If the Energy tab is clean and the machine still drains, we read the battery's cycle count and cell voltages on the bench and tell you whether to return it to the seller before the window closes.
New machine, fast drain
Sudden drain on a new Air is usually software, not the battery.
A MacBook Air M4 is rated for most of a working day on mixed use. When a new one empties in a few hours the cause is almost always something running in the background rather than a faulty cell, and the Energy tab in Activity Monitor will name it.
First-run sync is the most common culprit. Photos, Drive and Messages all index in the background after setup, and Spotlight rebuilds its index at the same time. Leaving the machine plugged in until that settles resolves a large share of cases.

Air M4 should give 18+ hours - if it dies in 4, here's what's eating the battery.
A brand-new MacBook Air M4 should last 15-18 hours of mixed use. Fast drain on a new machine is usually background activity, not a hardware fault. Open Activity Monitor → Energy tab to see which apps are using power. Common culprits: 1) Initial iCloud sync (Photos, Drive, Messages) - leave it plugged in overnight to finish syncing. 2) Spotlight indexing after migration - takes 4-12 hours on first boot. 3) Time Machine first backup. 4) A second-display via USB-C cuts battery by 30-40%. 5) Browser tabs auto-playing video.
Quick fixes: turn on Low Power Mode for the first day (Battery settings), disable Background App Refresh for non-essential apps, set Display brightness to 50%, and keep keyboard backlight off. The number that matters on a new M4 Air is the drop in percent over a timed hour of your real work, rather than the hours-remaining estimate. We ask people to note the percentage at the start and end of a sixty-minute stretch with the screen at half brightness. Below ten percent an hour is healthy. Twenty or more with light use means a process is awake, and in nearly every case on the Media City bench it has been a cloud sync client, often two of them fighting over the same folder.
Keep an eye on Dubai heat as well. An Air left in a car for an afternoon reports lower capacity for a day or two afterwards while the battery controller recalibrates. That is not a fault. A machine that reads below ninety percent maximum capacity within its first months is, and that one goes back to Apple.
