How to Check Mac Battery Health

macOS shows battery health in two places. Quick view: System Settings → Battery → click the small "i" next to Battery Health. You'll see Maximum Capacity (as a percentage) and Cycle Count. Apple says MacBook batteries are rated to retain 80% of original capacity at 1,000 cycles - that's typically 4-5 years of normal use. Indicators to watch: 1) Maximum Capacity below 80%. 2) Cycle Count above 1,000. 3) Sudden shutdowns at 30-50% remaining (the cell's internal resistance has climbed). 4) Visible swelling lifting the trackpad or keyboard - stop using and replace immediately, swollen lithium cells are a fire risk.

The health screen in macOS is a reasonable guide but it lags reality. On the bench we read the raw figures with a command-line tool: full charge capacity against design capacity, the cycle count, and the individual cell voltages where the pack reports them. A MacBook from a Dubai office that spent its life at 100 percent on a hot desk often reads 88 percent in System Settings and shows a cell voltage spread wide enough that it drops out under load.

Swelling is the other thing we watch for; it starts as a trackpad that clicks only on one side, or a lid that no longer sits flat when closed. That is a stop-using-it fault, and we ask people to bring the machine in that day rather than keep charging it.
