If that did not fix it

If the new drive is not showing

A 2010 to 2012 Mac mini that does not see its new SATA SSD after installation usually has the drive cable seated at an angle. The ribbon connector on the drive side is tiny and clips in at a slight tilt. Reseat it and boot holding Option to see whether the drive appears.

On 2018 Intel minis, any NAND work leaves the T2 chip expecting the old storage, so the machine needs a DFU restore through Apple Configurator from a second Mac before it will boot. If you have opened one and got a flashing folder, stop there and bring it in with the original drive.

Mac mini, by generation

The current Mac mini cannot be upgraded internally.

On the M1, M2 and M2 Pro Mac mini the storage is soldered to the logic board, and on the M4 and M4 Pro it sits on an Apple module paired to the chip, so there is no internal upgrade we offer on any Apple Silicon mini. Certain older Intel minis had a proprietary blade soldered to the board, and there we can sometimes perform a board-level NAND chip upgrade — we mention it because it exists and because people ask, not because we recommend it. It is delicate, it carries real risk to a working machine, and for most owners it is the wrong trade.

The route that actually makes sense on a Mac mini is external, and the mini is well suited to it: the machine lives on a desk, so a Thunderbolt 4 drive sitting beside it is no inconvenience at all. Real-world speed is close enough to internal that most workflows do not notice, and it costs substantially less than specifying the larger internal drive at purchase.

  • Storage sits in the processor package. There is no exception to this.

The full guide

SSD upgrade depends on the Mac mini year. Here's the full compatibility table.

Mac mini SSD upgradability by year: 1) Mac mini 2010-2012 - 2.5" SATA drive bay, fully user-upgradable. Swap for an SSD; we install 1 TB Crucial / Samsung at our Dubai workshop. 2) Mac mini 2014 - a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive bay plus a PCIe blade slot, so it can take an SSD. 3) Mac mini 2018 (Intel) - storage soldered to the board and tied to the T2 chip. Officially not user-serviceable, but at our workshop we can perform a board-level NAND chip upgrade in some configurations.

Risky and not recommended for most. 4) Mac mini M1, M2, M2 Pro - storage soldered to the logic board, not upgradable internally. Mac mini M4, M4 Pro - storage on a removable Apple module paired to the chip; Apple offers no capacity upgrade for it and we do not swap it. For Apple silicon Mac mini, the best alternative is an external Thunderbolt 4 SSD: real-world 2,800-3,000 MB/s, indistinguishable from internal for most workflows, and 70% cheaper than Apple's internal storage upgrades. We sell tested TB4 enclosures with installation at our Dubai stores.

From the bench: what we see with this one

The 2012 Mac mini is still a common upgrade at the Bur Dubai counter because people run them as media servers and small office file stores. The job that goes wrong at home is the second drive bay: fitting a second SSD means removing the logic board, and the antenna plate screws and the fan connector get damaged by people pulling at them. We also see 2014 minis brought in by owners who read the wrong year on a forum. That generation has a PCIe blade slot that is empty on the hard-drive-only models, so a blade SSD can be added alongside the hard drive, which most guides miss.

On Apple silicon minis we do not touch the storage. Instead we set the external drive as the home folder location so apps and documents live on the fast external while macOS stays on the internal, which gives most of the benefit of a bigger drive.

Platforms We Support

The device maker and the component vendors behind the repairs on our Dubai bench. Parts are named because grade matters more than the price on the sticker.

  • AppleMacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Studio across Intel, T2 and Apple silicon.
  • SamsungNVMe SSDs for upgrades on older Intel Macs, and the NAND we recover data from on soldered boards.
  • CrucialSSD and memory upgrades on the Macs that still take them, with the data migrated as part of the job.
  • KingstonSSD and memory alternatives to the Samsung and Crucial parts.
  • Western DigitalExternal and NAS drives we use for pre-repair backups and as migration targets.
  • SeagateBackup and archive drives for the data we copy off a device before it is opened.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

4 direct answers from the Azizi Technologies team.

Can the 2014 Mac mini take an SSD at all?
Partly. The 2014 model has soldered RAM but the storage is a SATA hard drive plus a PCIe blade slot. Fusion Drive models already use the slot; hard-drive-only models have it empty. An Apple-compatible blade or an adapter with an NVMe drive fits there, and the hard drive can stay as a second volume.
What speed will a SATA SSD give an old Mac mini?
Around 500 MB/s read on the 2011 and 2012 models, which have 6 Gb/s SATA. The 2010 mini is limited to 3 Gb/s, so roughly half that. Either way it is a large jump over the original hard drive, and boot time drops from about a minute to under twenty seconds on these machines in our experience.
Is it safe to boot an Apple silicon Mac mini from an external SSD permanently?
It works and Apple supports it, but macOS still needs the internal drive present and healthy because the Secure Enclave and boot policy live there. We suggest keeping macOS internal and moving the home folder or the big libraries out. Booting externally also adds a startup pause while the system validates the external volume.
