Quick answer

The Mac mini M4 has three Thunderbolt 4 ports each capable of 40 Gbps (≈3,000 MB/s real-world). To match that, pair a TB4 enclosure with a fast NVMe Gen4 SSD.

If that did not fix it

Drive fitted but speeds disappoint

A Gen4 drive in a Thunderbolt enclosure that benchmarks near 1,000 MB/s instead of 2,800 is almost always linked as USB rather than Thunderbolt. Open System Information, Thunderbolt and read the link speed; if the enclosure appears under USB instead, the cable is the problem, because many USB-C leads sold for charging negotiate only USB 3.

Slowdowns that appear after a few minutes of copying are heat. NVMe drives throttle hard above about 70 degrees and a sealed enclosure on a desk in a warm Dubai room gets there quickly. Bring the enclosure and cable and we test the link, the thermals and the drive's health in one session.

Matching the port

The M4 mini's Thunderbolt ports will outrun a cheap enclosure.

Each Thunderbolt 4 port on the Mac mini M4 carries 40 Gbps, which lands near 3,000 MB/s in real use. Getting that requires two things to be right: a genuine Thunderbolt 4 enclosure, and a fast Gen4 NVMe drive inside it. Get either wrong and the pairing settles at the speed of the weaker half.

The mistake we see most is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 enclosure bought because it looked similar and cost less. That standard tops out around a third of Thunderbolt 4, so an expensive NVMe drive inside one runs at a third of what it is capable of. Two practical notes once it is built: format APFS, encrypted if it holds anything you care about, and keep it under about 80 percent full, because sustained write speed falls away as an SSD fills.

  • The wrong enclosure caps a fast NVMe drive at roughly a third of its speed.

The full answer

External 2TB storage that won't bottleneck the M4? Here are the enclosures and drives that hit full speed.

The Mac mini M4 has three Thunderbolt 4 ports each capable of 40 Gbps (≈3,000 MB/s real-world). To match that, pair a TB4 enclosure with a fast NVMe Gen4 SSD. Top combos: 1) OWC Envoy Pro FX with Samsung 990 Pro 2TB - ~2,800 MB/s read/write, bus-powered, AED 1,600 + AED 950. 2) Acasis TBU405 Pro with Crucial T700 2TB - under AED 2,200 total, hits 2,900 MB/s. 3) Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q - pre-built, plug-and-play.

Avoid USB 3.2 Gen 2 enclosures (max 1,050 MB/s) - they'll cap the SSD at a third of its speed. Format as APFS (Encrypted) for Time Machine or daily use. Keep the drive under 80% full for sustained writes. Need help picking and provisioning? We stock OWC and Sabrent enclosures, install the SSD, format for macOS, and run a full speed test before handing it over.

From the bench: what we see with this one

We assemble these for video editors and photographers at the Concord Tower bench most weeks, and the choice that matters more than the drive brand is the enclosure's heat path. An aluminium enclosure with a thermal pad touching the controller holds full speed through a long export; a plastic one does not, however fast the drive inside. We also avoid the newest Gen5 drives in Thunderbolt 4 boxes because the controller runs hot and Thunderbolt 4 cannot use the extra speed anyway.

Format matters for what you will do with it. APFS for a working drive you edit from. For a Time Machine target we still format APFS but keep it as a dedicated volume so backups and project files never compete for space.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

4 direct answers from the Azizi Technologies team.

Will a Thunderbolt 5 enclosure work on the Mac mini M4?
It will, but it falls back to Thunderbolt 4 speeds because the base M4 mini has Thunderbolt 4 ports. Only the M4 Pro mini carries Thunderbolt 5. If you plan to move the drive to a Pro later the extra cost may be worth it; for the base mini a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure gives the same result for less.
Can I boot the Mac mini M4 from an external NVMe SSD?
Install macOS onto the external drive and choose it under System Settings, General, Startup Disk. The internal SSD must still hold a working macOS because Apple silicon keeps its boot firmware there, so you cannot empty it completely. Booting externally over Thunderbolt feels close to internal speed for everyday work.
Should the external SSD be encrypted?
For anything that leaves the desk, yes. APFS Encrypted costs nothing in speed on Apple silicon because the chip handles the encryption in hardware. Store the password in your keychain or a manager you trust. Without it the data cannot be recovered by anyone, including us on the bench.
What are your workshop hours and locations?
There are two Azizi Technologies workshops you can walk into: Office 45 on the 10th floor of Concord Tower in Dubai Media City, near Marina, JLT, Al Barsha and Jumeirah, and G 58 in the IT Center Building, Bur Dubai, near Karama, Deira and Downtown. Both open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00, with a Friday prayer break, closed Sunday. Repairs are taken in at the counter only, so pick whichever is nearer.
