Mac Mini M4 Internal+External SSD

Yes, you can combine the Mac mini M4's internal SSD and an external Thunderbolt 4 SSD into a single APFS container or a Fusion-like setup using Disk Utility or Terminal (`diskutil cs` for CoreStorage, or `diskutil apfs createContainer` spanning two physical disks). It will work - macOS will show one big volume - but it's a bad idea for three reasons. 1) Reliability: if the external is unplugged or its cable fails, the entire spanned volume goes offline. 2) Speed: macOS reads/writes to both disks; the slower one (external Thunderbolt 4 at ~3,000 MB/s) bottlenecks the internal (5,000-7,000 MB/s). 3) macOS doesn't officially support spanning APFS containers across removable media - major OS updates may break the configuration without warning.

We have taken apart a handful of these spanned setups at the Media City office, usually built by someone following a Linux habit. The failure is always the same shape: the external enclosure went to sleep or its cable was knocked, macOS marked the container as degraded, and the owner did not notice for a week. What actually helps people who want one big drive is a different trick. We make the external the home folder location, or symlink the big library folders, so the Finder experience is one place while the two drives stay independent. For video editors, Final Cut and Resolve both handle a separate media drive natively.

The other setup we build is an external that holds a bootable clone, made with Carbon Copy Cloner, so the machine survives an internal failure. That gives far more safety than a span, which doubles the chance of total loss.
