What passive cooling means once the machine is on the bench
The MacBook Air M5 arrived in March 2026 in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, carrying a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU, a 16-core neural engine and up to 32GB of unified memory in a chassis with no fan in it. Apple bought roughly 18 percent more sustained-load efficiency over the M4, and the practical effect is cooler fanless operation even through a long Final Cut Pro export. That is a design choice, not a defect, and it is why an owner reporting a warm palm rest usually has nothing wrong at all.
It also rewrites the repair. Heat has to travel through the case, so anything that interrupts that path counts: dust drawn through the chassis vents during sandstorm season, a pack seated a fraction proud after a careless battery swap, a top case reassembled without the adhesive being cleaned back properly. The Air is thin enough that those millimetres matter, which is why the March 2026 pack, at slightly greater thickness than the M4 one, made us rewrite the isopropyl dwell time in our own procedure. Both run Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 21:00, break for Friday prayers from 12:00 to 14:00 and close on Sunday. If several Airs from one office need doing, message first: we would rather collect the batch in a single visit than have somebody carry four laptops across town in August.
