When the drive will not appear
A drive that does not mount is usually not a broken drive.
Format is the first suspect. macOS reads exFAT, FAT32, APFS and HFS+ without help, but a drive formatted NTFS — the Windows default — mounts read-only unless third-party drivers are installed. If you can see the files but cannot write to them, that is what you are looking at, and nothing is wrong with the hardware.
Then power and ports. Modern MacBooks are USB-C only, so an older drive needs an adapter, and a bus-powered drive can draw more current than a single port supplies — a powered hub fixes what looks like a dead drive surprisingly often. Check Finder is actually set to display external disks, then open Disk Utility: if the drive appears there, you have a format or permissions problem rather than a hardware one, and First Aid is the next step. If it does not appear at all, stop using it and bring it in, because continued attempts are how a recoverable drive becomes an unrecoverable one.

If an external hard drive doesn't show up on your MacBook, work through this checklist. 1) Format compatibility: macOS reads exFAT, FAT32, APFS, and HFS+ natively. NTFS-formatted drives (the Windows default) are read-only on macOS without third-party drivers (Paragon NTFS, Tuxera, Mounty). 2) Port and cable: newer MacBooks only have USB-C / Thunderbolt. Use a USB-C to USB-A adapter for older drives.
Avoid bus-powered drives on a single USB-C port - they often need more current than one port supplies; use a powered hub. 3) Show drives in Finder: Finder → Settings → General → tick "External disks" and "Hard disks". 4) Open Disk Utility - if the drive appears there, it's a format/permission issue, not a hardware issue. 5) Faulty drive: open Disk Utility, run First Aid.
