Stage 1 — cable & adapter
Swap to a known-good charger. If it works, you just saved a repair bill entirely.
Stage 2 — port & pins
Visual and continuity check for bent pins, corrosion or a cracked port housing.
Stage 3 — battery health

Stage 4 — board-level check

When to stop testing it yourself
Three warning signs mean stop DIY-troubleshooting and bring it in the same day.
Heat around the trackpad or bottom case during charging can indicate a swelling cell — a safety issue, not just an inconvenience. Stop charging it and bring it in.
A connection that comes and goes usually means a marginal port or solder joint that will fail completely if you keep forcing the cable at different angles.
If the MacBook is still holding some charge, back up now — a charging fault can progress to a full board failure before a scheduled diagnosis.
