The launch window
Apple has not announced the M5 MacBook as of mid-2026, so anyone quoting a firm date is guessing. What we can do is read the cadence. The M1 arrived in November 2020, the M2 in June 2022, the M3 in October 2023, and the M4 Pro and Max in October 2024. That rhythm points to an October to November 2026 launch for the next-generation MacBook Pro, with the MacBook Air M5 refresh most likely landing in early 2027. It is a pattern, not a promise, but it is enough to plan a sale around.
The earliest reliable signals do not come from rumour sites. They come from the supply chain: TSMC's 2nm production ramp commentary and Apple's quarterly component orders have historically led the actual announcement by four to six months. If you read trade press in July or August 2026 describing Apple finalising 2nm Pro and Max die orders, the autumn announcement window firms up considerably. That is your cue that the clock on the outgoing generation's resale value has started.
The Apple event rule
Resale values soften within about forty-eight hours of a major Apple event, WWDC in June, the MacBook event in autumn. If you have decided to sell within the next ninety days and an event is approaching, sell before the announcement, not after. Supply rises and demand pauses in the same window, which is the worst combination for a seller.
The transition effect

Only around seven months old at mid-2026. Still trades above the M3 generation after an M5 launch, but the floor moves down. For most owners the incremental jump does not justify the trade-up cost, hold is usually the answer.
The most launch-sensitive segment. Max-tier buyers prioritise the newest silicon and the resale pool is smaller, so this generation softens hardest and fastest in the first thirty days after an announcement.
A middle case. Real demand from creative pros and developers keeps it liquid, but the outgoing-generation discount is meaningful. If you have decided to upgrade, selling before the reveal protects clearly more value.
The most insulated part of the lineup. Air buyers weigh price and portability over chip generation, so launch-day drops are the smallest of any tier, timing matters less, though it still helps.
The MacBook Air M1 remains the outlier of the whole range: its used value has plateaued rather than continuing to fall, thanks to long Apple silicon support and universal appeal. If you own one, there is no launch-timing urgency at all.
What moves your number
Six levers set how sensitive your MacBook's value is to the M5 launch. Understanding them tells you how urgent your sell-or-hold decision really is.
The closer the M5 announcement, the more downward pressure on the outgoing generation. Selling before the reveal protects the most value.
Max-tier resale is the most launch-sensitive; Pro sits in the middle; the Air is relatively insulated because Air buyers weigh price over silicon generation.
A seven-month-old M4 loses far less by waiting than an M2 or M3 that is already one or two cycles deep into depreciation.
Higher RAM and larger SSD configurations hold value better through a transition, but heavily custom Pro/Max builds have a smaller buyer pool.
A healthy battery with a low cycle count keeps your MacBook in the top condition tier; a tired battery is a small, itemised adjustment.

The M4 owner's dilemma
M4 Pro and Max owners face a genuinely different decision from everyone else. The M4 is only around seven months old at mid-2026, and the M5 jump is expected to be an incremental one, roughly a ten to fifteen percent CPU improvement, with modest GPU and Neural Engine gains. The honest answer for most M4 owners is to hold. The depreciation you absorb by selling an M4 to fund an M5 is, for a small real-world improvement, hard to justify.
The exceptions are specific and measurable. Video editors and 3D artists working 4K to 8K timelines who can quantify hours per week saved on encode and render. ML researchers who need the newer Neural Engine. If that is you, and you can put a number on the time the M5 gives back, upgrading can pay for itself. For everyone else, writers, developers, designers, students, executives, the M4 is already far faster than the workload demands. Hold it for two to three years and skip the M5 entirely.
The 90-day window
If you have decided to upgrade and the M5 reveal is sixty to ninety days out, sell now.
