MacBooks depreciate, but not the way generic gadget blogs claim. Some models, the Air M1 and the 14-inch M1 Pro, hold value far better than the "half after two years" rule of thumb; heavily custom-specced Pro machines drop fast in year one. This guide draws on 19 years of Azizi Technologies buy-back and repair experience in Dubai to explain the five factors that set your MacBook's trade-in value, chip, RAM, SSD, battery cycles and condition, and the timing rules that decide whether you should sell now or hold. No prices, no pressure, just how to read your own machine and get a free written valuation when you're ready.

What sets a MacBook's trade-in value in Dubai
A MacBook's trade-in value in Dubai is set by five things, the chip and generation, the amount of unified memory, the SSD size, the battery cycle count, and physical condition, with paperwork and the timing of your sale on top. Apple silicon holds value far better than Intel, the MacBook Air M1 barely depreciates, and resale demand cools sharply in the thirty days after every major Apple event. This guide, written by an Azizi Technologies Apple repair engineer, explains each factor so you can read your own machine and decide whether to sell now or hold. 19 years buying and repairing MacBooks in Dubai, 4.9 stars from 643 Google reviews, free written valuation in 30 minutes.

The five value drivers, explained
A MacBook's resale number is not one figure pulled from the air, it is built from these factors, each one readable on your own machine before you ever ask for a quote.
The single biggest driver. Apple silicon (M4, M3, M2, M1) holds value dramatically better than any Intel MacBook, because buyers want the battery life and performance. Within Apple silicon, newer generations and Pro/Max variants sit at the top of the tier.
More unified memory lifts the offer over base models, and higher-spec Pro/Max configurations lift it further. The catch: extreme custom builds recover a smaller share of what the memory upgrade cost new, because few used buyers want exactly that spec.
Larger internal SSDs add to resale value, 1 TB and 2 TB configurations are broadly desirable. Multi-terabyte custom builds (4 TB, 8 TB) add the least per gigabyte because the addressable buyer pool narrows.
Open System Information, Power, and read the cycle count and condition. A low count with Normal condition supports the top of the range; a high count or a Service Recommended warning becomes a transparent, itemised deduction.
Grade honestly: mint, light wear, or damaged. Cracked screens, dents, scuffs and missing keys are all accepted with a clear line item, an in-house Apple repair lab means damage is a predictable adjustment, not a rejection.
The original Apple UAE invoice, a matching-serial box, active AppleCare+ and genuine service receipts all lift the number and remove negotiation friction. A traceable, documented MacBook sells faster and closer to top of range.
Value moves with the Apple calendar. Resale demand cools within 48 hours of a WWDC or autumn MacBook announcement. Timing your sale correctly is worth as much as one of the hardware factors above.
How to value your MacBook yourself
Before you ask anyone for a number, you can size up your own MacBook. Four steps to a realistic expectation, then WhatsApp us to confirm it with a free written valuation.
Open the Apple menu, About This Mac. Note the exact chip (M4 Pro, M3 Max, M2, M1, or an Intel model), the unified memory, and the storage size. This trio places you in the right value tier, Apple silicon high, Intel low, Pro/Max and larger configs higher within each.
Hold Option and click the Apple menu, then System Information, and select Power. Read the cycle count and battery condition. A low count with Normal condition supports a top valuation; a high count or Service Recommended warning is a known, itemised adjustment, not a dealbreaker with an in-house repair lab.
Assess the screen and chassis honestly, mint, light wear or damaged, and gather your invoice, box and AppleCare status. Then check the Apple calendar: if a WWDC or autumn MacBook event is within 90 days and you plan to sell, sell before the keynote, not after.
WhatsApp a few clear photos plus your chip, RAM, SSD and cycle count to +971 55 753 0104. You get a written valuation within 30 minutes during workshop hours, valid for several days, with each condition adjustment itemised, and honest sell-or-hold advice from someone who repairs these machines daily.

The 2026 value picture
Depreciation is steepest in the first year, then flattens. But it varies enormously by model line, here is where the money stays, and where it evaporates.

The value drivers in detail
Each factor is something you can read on your own machine, and each appears as a line item on a proper written valuation, so nothing is hidden.
Apple silicon (M4 / M3 / M2 / M1) holds far more value than any Intel MacBook. Newer generations and Pro/Max variants sit in the highest resale tier; Intel Touch Bar and Retina units are accepted at a lower tier.
Higher unified-memory and Pro/Max configurations lift the offer over base models, but recovery tapers off on extreme custom builds where the used-buyer pool is small.
Larger internal SSDs (1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB, 8 TB) add to resale value, though multi-terabyte custom builds recoup a smaller share of what the upgrade cost new.
Read the cycle count in System Information. Low cycles plus a healthy battery support a top valuation; a high count or Service Recommended warning is an itemised deduction.
Mint, light wear or damaged, cracked screens, dents and missing keys are all accepted with a transparent line item, thanks to the in-house Apple repair lab.
Original UAE invoice, matching-serial box, active AppleCare+ and service receipts all lift the number and remove negotiation friction.
Timing your sale
Timing is the most under-rated value factor. Two rules cover almost every situation.
Resale demand cools within roughly 48 hours of a major Apple announcement, June's WWDC and the autumn MacBook event are the two to watch. Buyers pause to see the new lineup, and existing owners rush to liquidate. If you have decided to sell within the next 90 days and an event is approaching, sell before the keynote. The most common Dubai timing mistake is listing three days after a launch.
Get today's valuation, then estimate next year's using your model's depreciation pattern. If the expected drop is large and you can comfortably get another useful year from the machine, hold. If the drop is small, sell now, you are about to enter the steeper part of the curve. We run this maths with clients on WhatsApp, and if the honest answer is "keep it", we say so.
Two reasons. First, official Apple pricing in the UAE includes 5% VAT and sits above the straight US conversion, which props up the used market correspondingly. Second, Dubai's high expat turnover, people relocating out of the country and needing to liquidate quickly, feeds a constant flow of nearly-new MacBooks into a liquid second-hand market. A clean, well-documented MacBook typically finds a buyer in a day or two through the right channel.
