The part people get wrong
Each Apple category has its own clean-handover procedure, and the sequence genuinely matters, do it in this order to avoid getting locked out of your own Apple ID partway through.
Back up first
Take an iCloud or local backup of everything you actually want to keep, photos, messages, documents. Once a device is erased, that data is gone. If you like, we can help you pre-export specific folders to an external drive you bring, at no charge.
Unpair every Apple Watch (do this before erasing the iPhone)
On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app, go to All Watches, tap the info button next to the watch, and choose Unpair Apple Watch. This backs up the Watch and, critically, removes its Activation Lock. Skipping this is the single most common mistake.
Forget your AirPods
On the iPhone, go to Settings, Bluetooth, tap the info button on the AirPods entry, and choose Forget This Device. This disassociates them from your Apple ID so the next owner can pair cleanly.
Sign out and erase iPhones and iPads
On each iPhone and iPad, go to Settings, tap your name, Sign Out (enter your Apple ID password to remove Activation Lock), then Erase All Content and Settings.
Sign out and erase each Mac
On each MacBook, iMac, Mac mini or Mac Studio, sign out of iMessage, FaceTime, the App Store and then iCloud. On Apple Silicon use Erase All Content and Settings; on Intel use Disk Utility to erase and then reinstall macOS.
Sign out of Apple ID on anything you are keeping
Finally, sign out of your Apple ID on any device you are keeping but want disassociated from the ones you are selling, so nothing stays linked to a device leaving your hands.
The most common mistake
Erasing the iPhone before unpairing the Apple Watch leaves the Watch in a partially locked state that then needs the original Apple ID password to clear. Always unpair the Watch through the paired iPhone first, then erase the iPhone. If you have already done it in the wrong order, we can help untangle it in person as long as you know the Apple ID password.
