Three categories often get bundled under the same word:
- Apple Certified Refurbished (UAE) - returned within 14 days, factory-reconditioned by Apple, new battery and outer shell, full 1-year Apple warranty, sold at 10-15% off list. Limited stock.
- Authorised reseller refurbished (Azizi and similar) - sourced from trade-ins, professionally cleaned, battery and SSD health-tested, cosmetically graded, sold with a written shop warranty (ours is 90 days). The bulk of the refurb market in Dubai.
- Dubizzle / private 'used' - not refurbished at all, just second-hand sold as-is. No warranty, no quality testing, no return. Cheapest but riskiest.
Our refurb process
Every Azizi refurbished MacBook goes through a 40-point checklist: battery health (must be above 85% or we replace it), SSD SMART read, all ports tested, screen pixel check, keyboard and trackpad full-key test, deep clean inside and out, macOS reinstall to latest supported version, then a written 90-day shop warranty. Warranty by purchase channel
The headline warranty gap is smaller than people assume. Apple's 1-year base warranty mostly covers manufacturing defects that show up in the first 30-90 days. After that, the chance of needing the warranty drops sharply. When new is the right answer
- You need a model that has just launched (M5 Pro day-one buyer) - refurb stock takes 12-18 months to appear in volume.
- You need AppleCare+ for accidental damage coverage at maximum duration (only sold within 60 days of original Apple purchase).
- Corporate compliance teams that require provable single-owner chain of custody for the laptop's entire lifecycle.
- Gift or status purchase where the sealed box matters more than the saving.
When refurbished wins
- Student or first-job professional needing a working macOS machine on a budget - a refurbished Air M1 outperforms most Windows laptops selling at AED 4,000, for noticeably less.
- Small business buying 3-10 machines for the team - the saving across the whole order is real money you can put into the business instead.
- Bridge / spare laptop while waiting for a new machine to arrive - holds value, easy to resell when the new one arrives.
- Backup machine for travel or client sites - an older refurb you would not mind losing in a Marina cafe.

The 70% rule
If the refurbished AED price is 60-70% of the new price for the same chip generation, refurbished wins almost every time. Below 50% you may be looking at a tired Intel-era model and the savings stop justifying the older hardware.
