Format it once, correctly
For a Mac-only backup drive, APFS encrypted is the answer.
APFS is the modern macOS file system: snapshot-based, native to Time Machine, and built with copy-on-write integrity that matters on a drive whose whole purpose is holding the copy you fall back on. Choosing the encrypted variant applies protection at the file-system layer, which is the sensible default for a drive that might leave the desk. Format it in Disk Utility with a GUID Partition Map.
The exception is a drive you also need to use on Windows. There, exFAT is the practical choice — it reads and writes natively on both systems, at the cost of Time Machine support and copy-on-write. Two formats to avoid: HFS+ has no advantage on an SSD over APFS, and FAT32 cannot hold a file over 4 GB, which rules it out for almost any modern backup.
Snapshot-based hourly backups depend on it — exFAT cannot do this.
The right default for any drive that might leave the office.
Choose it when Windows must read the drive, and accept losing Time Machine.
We set the scheme and format correctly, then confirm Time Machine actually takes it.
The full answer
APFS, HFS+, or exFAT? It depends on whether the drive is Mac-only or shared with Windows.
For a Mac-only external backup drive on a Mac mini M4, format as APFS (Encrypted). APFS is the modern macOS file system - snapshot-based, native Time Machine support since macOS Big Sur, and copy-on-write data integrity. Open Disk Utility → select the drive → Erase → Format APFS → Scheme GUID Partition Map. Choose "APFS (Encrypted)" to encrypt at the file-system layer (FileVault-equivalent for the external). If the drive will also be used on Windows, format as exFAT - it loses Time Machine support and copy-on-write but reads and writes natively on both.
Do NOT use HFS+ unless you need to share with macOS pre-Big Sur - APFS is faster on SSDs and has fewer bugs. FAT32 is obsolete (4 GB max file size). For Time Machine specifically: APFS is required for snapshot-based hourly backups. Need help formatting and setting up Time Machine? We do it as part of any service at our Dubai workshop.
If the drive is an older CD or DVD unit that never mounts, see Mac can't locate an external CD drive.
