Mac Studio M4 Max has no spinning hard drive and no moving parts other than the cooling fan, so any clicking sound during After Effects preview render needs investigation. We see this complaint regularly from motion designers in Dubai Media City, Studio City and Tecom. There are three real sources and one false alarm. 1) Capacitor coil whine on the power delivery board during heavy GPU load - this is by far the most common cause. After Effects preview render and Cinema 4D Lite previews push the M4 Max GPU above 80 percent for sustained periods. The 12V and 5V power-stage inductors and ceramic capacitors on the logic board vibrate at switching frequency (typically 200 to 500 kHz) which produces a quiet high-pitched whine or rapid clicking. It is not dangerous, it is not a fault, and Apple covers it under warranty only if the noise is loud enough to be heard 1 metre away in a quiet room. If yours is quiet (audible only at 30cm), it is within Apple's spec. 2) Cooling fan bearing wear after 2 to 3 years of Dubai climate use - dust ingress and ambient heat shortens fan bearing life. Symptoms: clicking synchronised with fan ramp-up, often a tick-tick-tick at low RPM. Fan replacement at our Dubai workshop AED 300 to AED 450 including new thermal paste. 3) Internal SSD module thermal expansion under load - rare but real. The Apple removable SSD module sits in a sprung clip and as the SoC heats up under sustained render the chassis expands slightly causing the SSD clip to flex audibly. Confirmed by listening with the case open while running a Resolve or AE render - the noise comes from the SSD bay area. Reseat the SSD module with fresh thermal pad - we do this at AED 250 to AED 400.
4) The false alarm: audio peripheral wake noise. USB audio interfaces (UA Apollo, RME Babyface, Focusrite Clarett) occasionally emit clicks when the macOS audio driver is reinitialised by After Effects switching from preview audio to silent render. This sounds like it's coming from the Mac Studio but is actually the audio interface. Test by playing the render with the audio interface unplugged - if clicks disappear, the interface is the source. Diagnostic process at our Dubai Media City workshop: 1) Record the noise with the iPhone 16 placed 10cm from the Mac Studio during a controlled After Effects render. 2) Spectrum analyse the recording - capacitor whine peaks at 250 to 350 kHz harmonics, fan bearing wear is broadband 200 to 2000 Hz, SSD clip flex is a single dull thunk every 30 to 60 seconds. 3) Open chassis to verify source physically. 4) Quote based on diagnosis - capacitor whine usually no action needed (we explain it's normal), fan replacement AED 300 to AED 450, SSD reseat AED 250 to AED 400, port or board damage AED 600+. Free diagnosis intake. 90-day warranty on parts and labour. Concord Tower Dubai Media City 10th Floor or IT Center Building Bur Dubai. Mon-Sat 9am-9pm (Fri break 12-2pm), Sun closed.
