Sizing a NAS for a Dubai SMB

The most common NAS mistake we see in Dubai offices is buying for today's data instead of year-five data. A NAS is a five-to-seven-year investment, so sizing has to start with three numbers: how much data you hold right now, how fast it grew over the last twelve months, and how many people will read and write to the unit at the same time. From those three inputs we work out bay count, drive capacity, and how much space the RAID level will consume as overhead. Our rule of thumb, refined over Dubai installs since 2007, is to take your current data, double it, and then add roughly a third again as headroom for snapshots, file versioning, and the growth nobody predicted. Concurrent users matter just as much as raw terabytes - twenty staff hammering shared folders at once needs a faster CPU class and more RAM than a two-person studio archiving finished projects, even if both hold the same volume of data.

• 5-15 users with documents and accounting data: a 2-bay or 4-bay unit with mirrored or single-parity RAID is usually right
• 15-40 users or design and media workloads: 4-bay to 6-bay with dual-drive fault tolerance so a rebuild is never a gamble
• Video production, CCTV recording, or imaging archives: 8-bay and up, ideally with 10GbE networking to the editing workstations
• Leave empty bays on day one - expanding drive by drive as data grows is smarter than maxing capacity upfront
• Plan RAM and CPU for concurrent users, not just storage volume - performance complaints are usually compute, not disk

NAS Security Hardening

A NAS concentrates your most valuable files in one box, which makes it a prime ransomware target - attackers who get into a network go looking for the file server first. Factory-default settings are built for convenience, not safety, so every NAS we configure in Dubai is hardened before it goes live. The single most important protection is scheduled, immutable snapshots: point-in-time copies of every shared folder that ransomware cannot encrypt or delete, letting you roll a poisoned share back to an hour before the attack. Around that core we lock down accounts, connectivity, and firmware so the unit stays defensible for years, not just on install day.
