Mac Studio has become the default video editing workstation in Dubai Media City, Studio City and the Knowledge Park production cluster. We support dozens of editors, colourists and post-production studios across the city - from solo wedding cinematographers in Tecom to 40-person commercial post houses in DMC. The recurring question is always the same: M4, M4 Max or M4 Ultra, and is the upgrade worth the AED price jump?
This guide answers that question with field-tested benchmarks in DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro across realistic Dubai workflows. We have not lifted these numbers from generic YouTube reviews - they come from real Dubai editor machines we service and have benchmarked under controlled conditions.
Which Mac Studio for which workflow
The single most useful framework is to match the chip variant to the highest resolution and codec you regularly edit, plus the typical timeline complexity (effect nodes, colour grading, VFX layers).
| Workflow | Recommended variant | RAM minimum | Internal SSD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p / light 4K, social content | M4 base Mac Studio | 32 GB | 1 TB |
| 4K ProRes, wedding / event | M4 Max | 64 GB | 2 TB |
| 4K Raw, multicam, commercial | M4 Max | 64-96 GB | 2-4 TB |
| 6K Raw, Netflix-spec docu | M4 Ultra | 128 GB | 4 TB |
| 8K Raw, feature post, heavy grade | M4 Ultra | 192-256 GB | 4-8 TB |
| VFX-heavy 4K, Nuke / Fusion | M4 Ultra | 192 GB | 4 TB |

DaVinci Resolve benchmarks in Dubai
DaVinci Resolve is the most demanding common editor in terms of GPU load, especially with Fusion comps and Neural Engine tools (Magic Mask, Speed Warp, Object Removal). Here is how the three variants compare on representative Dubai workloads.
| Task | M4 base | M4 Max | M4 Ultra |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K ProRes export, 5 min timeline | 3m 40s | 1m 55s | 1m 10s |
| 6K Raw colour grade, 30 nodes | Sluggish | Real-time | Real-time |
| Fusion comp, 4K composite | Stutter | Smooth | Smooth |
| Magic Mask, 4K subject track | Slow | Fast | Very fast |
| 8K Raw playback | Quarter-res only | Half-res | Full-res most clips |
| DaVinci Neural Engine speed warp 4K | 30s/sec source | 12s/sec source | 7s/sec source |

When M4 Max is enough
If you do not regularly hit 6K or 8K and your colour grade does not stack 30+ nodes per clip, M4 Max with 64 GB RAM is the sweet spot for 90% of Dubai editors. The jump to M4 Ultra is worth it only if you genuinely live in 6K or 8K or you do heavy Fusion work.
Final Cut Pro - the underrated option
Final Cut Pro is heavily optimised for Apple Silicon and runs absurdly well on Mac Studio. Many Dubai wedding and corporate editors who have not retested FCP since switching to Resolve are surprised how fast it now feels. Background rendering, ProRes export and proxy generation all run faster on FCP than on Resolve for the same hardware.
- 4K ProRes wedding edit (90-minute timeline) renders to ProRes 422 HQ in 6-8 minutes on M4 Max
- Final Cut Pro Smart Conform works real-time on M4 base for social aspect-ratio reformat
- Object Tracker on FCP handles 4K subject masks at near real-time on M4 Max
- Magnetic Timeline scales to 200+ clips without scrubbing lag on M4 Max
- FCP libraries on the internal SSD vs external Thunderbolt SSD has minimal performance difference on M4 Ultra
Adobe Premiere Pro - still the agency standard
Premiere is the default at most Dubai agencies (Memac Ogilvy, Saatchi Dubai, Leo Burnett) because the broader Adobe ecosystem is non-negotiable for them. Premiere on Apple Silicon has caught up significantly but still trails FCP and Resolve in raw playback performance on the same hardware.
- ProRes 4K timeline playback is smooth on M4 base, near-real-time on M4 Max
- RED Raw timeline requires M4 Max minimum, M4 Ultra for comfort
- Lumetri grade with 15+ effect layers is the typical bottleneck - M4 Ultra makes it comfortable
- Productions Workflow (multi-editor) requires fast shared storage more than fast Mac
- After Effects compositions linked into Premiere benefit enormously from M4 Ultra RAM
Storage architecture - the part most editors get wrong
Mac Studio internal SSDs are fast (especially 2 TB and above), but they are not the right place to live with terabytes of project media. Dubai editors who treat the internal SSD as primary storage end up with 80%+ full drives by month 12, which kills write performance and causes thermal throttling under sustained load.
The cleanest architecture: internal SSD for OS, applications and current-week scratch. External Thunderbolt 5 SSD (OWC Envoy Pro FX, Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q) for active projects. Shared NAS (Synology DS1823+ or QNAP TVS-h1288X) for archived projects. Cloud or LTO for cold archive. We deploy this exact stack regularly for Dubai post houses.
Shared storage for multi-editor studios
If your studio has more than two editors, shared storage is mandatory. We typically deploy 10 GbE Synology or QNAP NAS units with SSD cache, connected via 10 GbE Thunderbolt adaptors on each Mac Studio. Budget AED 18,000 to 60,000 depending on capacity and head count.
Real Dubai studio examples
- Wedding videographer in Tecom: M4 Max 64 GB / 2 TB + 4 TB external Thunderbolt SSD - AED 22,000 total - handles 4K multicam wedding edits comfortably
- Boutique post house in Dubai Media City: 3x M4 Ultra 128 GB / 4 TB + Synology 80 TB 10 GbE NAS - AED 180,000 total - handles 6K commercial post for regional brands
- Documentary editor in Studio City: M4 Max 96 GB / 4 TB + LTO archive - AED 28,000 - long-form 4K documentary work, occasional Netflix delivery
- Solo colourist freelance from Knowledge Park: M4 Ultra 192 GB / 4 TB + LG Ultrafine 5K reference monitor - AED 38,000 - DaVinci Resolve dailies for regional broadcasters
Buying through us
Azizi Technologies sells Mac Studio direct as an Apple-authorised reseller partner. We bundle setup, data migration, AppleCare+ if you want it, and a 12-month free thermal service into every Mac Studio purchase. Pricing matches Apple's UAE store - the value is the bundled service.
Common editor mistakes we see
- 1Buying the cheapest variant assuming you can upgrade RAM later - Apple Silicon RAM is fixed at purchase, you cannot
- 2Editing off the internal SSD until it is 90% full - causes thermal throttling and shortens SSD life
- 3Not running a UPS - Dubai's grid is generally stable but spikes happen, and unsaved Resolve projects after a power event are painful
- 4Using consumer-grade external SSDs over Thunderbolt - they thermal-throttle under sustained writes faster than Mac Studio does
- 5Skipping thermal service for 3+ years - dust + heat eventually causes throttling that gets blamed on the chip rather than the cooling

Frequently asked questions
Is M4 Max enough for 4K Raw editing in Dubai?
Yes for most 4K Raw codecs (ARRI, RED, Sony Venice) with 64-96 GB RAM. Real-time playback at half or full resolution depending on codec. Step up to M4 Ultra only if you regularly stack heavy grading (30+ nodes), Fusion comps or run multicam Raw timelines with five or more angles.
Do I need M4 Ultra for 6K?
Strongly recommended. M4 Max can handle 6K but you will spend a lot of time waiting on renders and dropping to lower playback resolutions. M4 Ultra with 128 GB RAM is the realistic minimum for comfortable 6K editing. For 8K, M4 Ultra with 192 GB or 256 GB RAM.
How much storage do I need for video editing?
Internal: 2 TB minimum for M4 Max, 4 TB for M4 Ultra. External: 4-8 TB Thunderbolt 5 SSD for active project media. NAS: 20-80 TB for archived projects, with 10 GbE network if more than one editor pulls from it. LTO for cold archive over 12 months old.
Does Apple sell Mac Studio in Dubai or do I need to import?
Apple sells direct via the UAE Apple Online Store and authorised resellers including Azizi Technologies. Pricing is standardised, no need to import. We bundle setup and 12-month service into Mac Studio sales which Apple direct does not include.
Can a Mac Studio replace a Mac Pro for video editing in Dubai?
For Apple Silicon workflows, yes - M4 Ultra Mac Studio outperforms the M2 Ultra Mac Pro at 10-30% lower cost. The only reason to choose Mac Pro is if you need PCIe slots for I/O cards (Decklink, AJA, Avid) or shared storage HBAs. See our Mac Studio vs Mac Pro guide for the full comparison.
How often should I service a Mac Studio used for heavy editing?
Annual thermal service minimum in Dubai. Heavy users (Resolve daily, 6K/8K timelines) should book a clean every 9-12 months and full repaste every 18 months. We send reminders by WhatsApp.
Will the Mac Studio M5 in October 2026 make M4 obsolete?
No. M4 Mac Studios will remain on supported macOS until roughly 2032-2033. M5 will be faster but the M4 generation is already overkill for 90% of Dubai editors. Buy M4 now if you need it - the resale value will hold reasonably well.
